    Are You Enough?

Vulnerability – (adj.) Capable of being hurt or wounded. Possibly the best way to know exactly what you want in life is to know exactly what you do not want in life. Three and half years ago I left my job as an elementary school teacher to spend more time with my family and more time writing. I remember the sudden sense of relief and freedom I felt when my schedule opened up. If I wanted to, I could stop and watch a osprey teach her baby to fly, go for walks with my son, spend an hour chatting with my daughter or drive to the store in the middle of…

My New Years Resolution: Be Me

It begins as an uneasiness that I push down and pretend is not there. I busy myself with chores. This time I cleaned our entire garage in four hours. That night when I laid down to sleep, proud of my accomplishment, there was the question sitting like a rock in my gut waiting for an answer. Taunting me, telling me I could clean for weeks and never escape until I faced it. The question? What did I have to say about New Years? I rolled over and went to sleep having no idea. The next day I tackled loads of laundry and more miles on the treadmill and elliptical than I had…

    Inspiration in Our Backyard

Thomas Edison and Henry Ford Winter Estates. Ft. Myers, Florida. Thomas Edison Quotes: My philosophy of life: Work and look on the bright side of everything. Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time. I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work. All progress, all success springs from thinking. If parents pass enthusiasm along to their children, they will leave them an estate of incalculable value.   I would like to live about three hundred years. I think I have ideas enough to keep me busy that long.

Glee and the University of Illinois

Having teens is a very exciting time. I get to watch them discover their passions and try to decide which path they will follow after graduation. I play the role of tour guide and gentle counselor. While there is an underlying sadness because I know that soon our house will be too quiet, there is also a joy in seeing their eagerness to explore and experience life as young adults. The night before we left for Champaign, Illinois, Arielle decided to record an audition video for the Glee Project. Unsure about her singing ability she still wanted to go for it and give it a try. Glee has been one of her…

    Fly Away

We have a screened lanai off our living room. Occasionally I will look out and see several butterflies trapped inside the screen, fluttering desperately, trying to get out of their cage. Some will stay within a short radius and try the same spots over and over. Others will fly from one end of the lanai to the other resting only for a second before they try again. Having broken out of their cocoon somewhere inside the pool cage they know there is more just beyond the screen. I open both doors to the lanai and place a plate of flowers sprinkled with sugar water on a table hoping to…
