Summer Reading List for Middle Grade and Young Adult

Summer Reading List for Middle Grade and Young Adult I’ve been so busy working on my next two books that it’s always a pleasant surprise when someone emails me and asks for an author visit for MYSTIC. I get to be surrounded by happy kids and talk about two of my favorite subjects reading and writing.  I have three visits in the next two weeks. Woohoo! I’m ready! During my author visits I always share some of my favorite books.  I tell the students that I’d love for them to enjoy, MYSTIC, but I know my story isn’t for everyone. The goal is to find what you love to read. Please feel free to leave a comment…

    What do you want?

What do you want? If someone were to ask me what I wanted I could immediately rattle off a list of things from wanting my books to sell, a new couch, a landscaped yard, the lot next door, to a trip to Europe…. Oh, and then I really do like learning at writing retreats. I’d like one of those too. I can think of many things I want but will they bring contentment or will the list never end? Hmmm, I really want to say, yes, they will definitely bring me contentment. Have you seen the new sectionals they have for sale? Luxurious! How could my books selling well not bring contentment? Well…because contentment comes…

Carnegie Hall To The Boston Marathon

When Kai began piano lessons at age five and Arielle discovered wheelchair road racing in middle school, I had no idea, years later, it would lead to a weekend of watching Kai perform at Carnegie Hall followed by Arielle racing in the Boston Marathon. Describing the amount of joy I’ve felt over the past five days is difficult. Walking through New York City, my eyes suddenly welled with tears knowing I needed to cherish each moment. This was a once in a lifetime weekend. I was proud of my children. Proud that they were following their passions. Proud that they had the courage to take on such huge challenges. Proud of the…

    Easter Caramel Apples

Somehow Halloween flew by and I never had a chance to eat one of my favorite treats. Caramel Apples! So, I decided to make them for Easter. I cheated and bought the bag of caramel from the grocery store. Basically, this recipe takes about 15 minutes to make. Wrap the caramel around the apples, pop in the stick, put it in the oven for five minutes and then decorate. Be sure to decorate quickly before the caramel hardens. You can always keep extra caramel warm on the stove to use as you create your apple masterpiece. Enjoy! Happy Easter and Happy Passover! I’m taking a short blog break for the holiday.…

    Weekly Photo Challenge: Threshold

“Leaving the old, both worlds at once they view, That stand upon the threshold of the new.” Edmund Waller WordPress has a weekly photo challenge. I’ve decided to give it a try because taking pictures slows me down and helps me see every day beauty. This week’s theme: Threshold. Threshold moments are those moments when you come to the realization that everything is about to change. I remember standing alone in a hospital bathroom trying to figure out how to get the tiny gown around my huge belly while also wrapping my head around the fact that I was on the threshold of motherhood. Eighteen years later, I stood in the doorway of my…

    Life’s Worth Fighting For

Meet Garfield. A beautiful orange unaltered tomcat that decided to make my yard his occasional home. He’d show up for a week or two never letting anyone near him yet act as though our house had always been his. There were no females for him to pursue. It must have been the food he was after. I decided to keep trying to win his trust so that one day I could get him to a vet and have him neutered. Each time he would disappear I found myself worrying about him wondering if he would return. He always did. Little by little Garfield began letting me get closer to him…
