    Mom and Son

“Please understand that everything I ask you to do has a purpose. Whether it’s learning to take out the trash and recycling every week, completing your homework on time, giving others your attention while they are performing, or remembering to say thank you when someone gives you a compliment – all of these things are lessons meant to help you make an easier transition into adulthood.” His reply; “I’m a teenager, mom. What do you expect?” I wanted to say “I expect you to do everything I ask, immediately, without question.” Well maybe I did say something along those lines during our hour long conversation. It was more like… please…

Glee and the University of Illinois

Having teens is a very exciting time. I get to watch them discover their passions and try to decide which path they will follow after graduation. I play the role of tour guide and gentle counselor. While there is an underlying sadness because I know that soon our house will be too quiet, there is also a joy in seeing their eagerness to explore and experience life as young adults. The night before we left for Champaign, Illinois, Arielle decided to record an audition video for the Glee Project. Unsure about her singing ability she still wanted to go for it and give it a try. Glee has been one of her…

    Halloween Extravaganza!

My feet are aching from standing in the kitchen barefoot for seven hours trying to create my Halloween extravaganza recipes. Sometimes my vision for the perfect party doesn’t quite match the reality of my cooking ability. I get a little carried away and think that I’m a wizard in the kitchen. I’m not. However, I was able to make some cool magic wands. It all started last week when I remembered that this is the last Halloween we’ll all be together. The last Halloween all the seniors at North High will be together. So, I decided to have a party. It’s really easy to say, “Hey, let’s have a party!” Go ahead try it. See… easy.…

Mayor Bloomberg on Accessible Taxis… Someone Help Me Understand…

Understanding human needs is half the job of meeting them. – Adlai Stevenson I came home last evening to a very angry 18 year-old. “Did you read what mayor Bloomberg said about accessible taxi’s in New York City?” Arielle experienced the discrimination first hand on our last visit to the Big Apple. I wrote about it here. At the time I had no idea there was a lawsuit filed dealing with the lack of accessible taxicabs in the city. I read the article Arielle was referring to and was extremely disappointed. Clearly from Mayor Bloomberg’s words it was obvious he had no understanding of the life of someone using a wheelchair. If he did,…
