Can You See Them?
Can you see how they’ve grown into young adults? Hear how he plays the piano and see how her smile lights up a room.
When you knew them she talked incessantly. Still does. He blazed his own path. Still
does.
Remember when they would sing carols for you and all your friends. She on the violin and him with all his faces making the audience laugh.
Can you see them now? Track, musicals, honor roll, steel drums, jazz band and friends
filling our home laughing and teasing one another. He’s taller than me. She’s
driving.
Did you know you only had a short time with them? Did you think about it? I didn’t. I was
young and they were small and every day was filled with bottles and diapers and
snacks in between breakfast, lunch and dinner. If I was lucky – a nap. I never
realized one day you’d be gone and not see the beautiful people they’ve become.
I was busy. They were babies and would stay babies – forever.
I was mistaken.
But can you see them now and how he is kind and accepting of others. She is strong and optimistic. All you.
Remember when we swam in your pool on hot summer days? You wore your sun hat and held him on your lap when he was sleepy. Hugging him did you wonder what kind of young man he would become?
Remember when she would climb up to your kitchen table, color pictures and ask how to spell great grandma? Did you want to hold on to that moment forever? Did you
wish with all your heart that you could see the young woman she would grow
into?
You never told me things would change. You never told me that one day you’d be gone and you would never see her graduate or listen to his deep voice or hear how his
pounding on the piano has turned into beautiful music.
You simply faded away into a confused mind and then disappeared. We never said good-bye.
A part of you is in me and in them. If you could see them now… if you could see them now…
