Sticks and Stones
There’s a scene in the movie Wild where Laura Dern and Reese Witherspoon are in a car and Reese (the daughter) tells Laura Dern (the mother) that she’s a more sophisticated reader than her mother. The mother turns to her daughter and tells her that’s the way it’s supposed to be.

The Gift
Here’s something a little different. I wrote a short story for the holidays. I had read a very moving Facebook status telling of the loss of a family member and how this time of year is especially difficult. So many memories. It got me thinking and that got me writing.

I was at Target the other day waiting in line when I struck up a conversation with a three-year old. She was telling me about her new red dress and her upcoming visit with Santa. Her father was busy entertaining her one year old sister. Every once in a while he would look back at his older daughter and make a comment. “You’re not a baby. Stop sucking your thumb.” “Keep an eye on our stuff.” When I mentioned how well the little girl could carry on a conversation he replied, “We’ve been working on it.” To me this three-year old was still just a baby but to her father she…
