    Can you handle the truth?

Can you handle the truth? Can you handle the truth/Find the fib was one of may favorite games to play with my students. I’d separate them into groups of five and ask each person to write two truths and one lie about themselves. Everyone in the group would have to guess the lie. We all learned a little more about each other and the game helped the quiet kids gather courage to speak. Jamie Ayers is celebrating the release of her second book 18 Truths by hosting a Can you handle the truth blogfest! Here’s how it’s played Read numbers 1-3 below. Decide which one is the fib. Tell me in the…

    VEGAN CHICK’N POTPIE

VEGAN CHICK’N POTPIE A few weeks ago I wrote about a great new cookbook I found – VEGAN COOKING FOR CARNIVORES, by Roberto Martin Arielle came home from college for a month and Eric decided it was time we learned how to cook. Not really. Arielle and I have always loved cooking recipes for this blog. It’s what we do. Since she’s training hard at school for her marathons we thought we better find some healthier recipes. We started with wild mushroom tomato sauce. It was delicious! However, I got in a bit of trouble because I posted the pictures of our delicious dinner without posting the recipe. Sorry! I wanted everyone to…

    Innocent and Assumed Guilty

Innocent and Assumed Guilty This morning I had a taste of what it feels like to be questioned by police and I have to say it certainly didn’t feel good! Here’s the story: I woke early to take Arielle to the airport. After having her home for a glorious month it was time for her to return to college. Obviously, I wasn’t feeling very chipper. I said good-bye, watched her wheel onto the plane and then put my head down and left the airport before anyone saw me blubbering like…well, a mom who has to say good-bye to her baby. On the way home over our beautiful Cape bridge I noticed the…

    Billy Joel

Billy Joel Back in the early nineties when Eric and I were dating we discovered we had very different tastes in music.  He enjoyed Metallica and Iron Maiden while I preferred Alannah Myles and Mariah Carey. However, there was one artist we both agreed upon, Billy Joel. Well, it’s been twenty four years but we finally saw him in concert. We had an amazing time! Getting tickets was tricky. We heard his shows sold out in minutes. So, we coordinated our efforts. Eric from work and me from my writing room. We called Ticketmaster navigating their automated system to see how best to get accessible seats. Then we waited until precisely ten…

    Wild Mushroom Tomato Sauce

Wild Mushroom Tomato Sauce I bought a new cookbook. Couldn’t resist it had such a catchy title. VEGAN COOKING FOR CARNIVORES by Roberto Martin Arielle had the honor of choosing the first meal. Wild mushroom tomato sauce over pasta. Luckily, Eric decided to help us. I believe Arielle’s words were, “Let’s just face it. We can’t cook.” We began with Eric insisting I read through the entire recipe. I have a habit of jumping right in and then realizing I’m missing some ingredients. Not good. Eric started chopping, Arielle stirred, and guess what I did? Took pictures! It’s my favorite part of cooking. Oh, I also grew these basil plants. People laughed at me…

    Buddy’s Story

Buddy’s Story The Shelter May/June 2012 I didn’t want another dog. I had two. Nahla an old cocker spaniel we rescued when she was three and Ollie. Ollie, our problem hound who loves our family and other animals but hates most humans. A knock on our door, heck even a bump in the kitchen sends Ollie into guard dog mode ready to attack anyone who dares enter our den. He stands guard on our stairs at night as if we are his sheep and he must protect us. Beautiful, proud, sometimes pain in the neck, Ollie. The thought of getting another dog after Ollie scared me. One day, I saw a picture on Facebook. Big…
